Frogs...Frogs...Frogs!

We're knees deep in our frog unit for Literacy! Make sure to ask your kiddo about the poems, pourquoi tales, and facts they're learning about. Be on the lookout for some opportunities in that last week before track out to celebrate the end of our study of frogs.

*Spoiler alert - start looking for some "froggy" colored clothes.*

Thank you to so many of you for meeting with me to discuss your child's successes! I've enjoyed being able to sit down and work together to ensure your child continues to excel on the path they're traveling. If we haven't been able to conference, there are still a few openings for next week. I look forward to meeting with everyone!

Please read on for new info and some important changes to our tentative assessment schedule.

Dear Elementary Families,

For the third consecutive year, we will partner with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring READvolution to all of our elementary schools. This exciting partnership will support a community-wide literacy campaign around daily reading outside of school, plus allow students the chance to attend a Hurricanes game.

This year the READvolution time frame will be between Monday, Sept. 30 and Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Your child will be able to be part of this event by reading daily for 20 minutes!

This year’s challenge features both individual and school-wide components, as well as goals for each. The individual component will include the following:

●  Through an online tracking system, students will provide their name and the number of minutes read each day. Please see the log-in instructions.

●  Students who achieve the goal of reading 20 minutes per day throughout the allotted time frame (for a total of 800 minutes) will receive two complimentary ticket vouchers to a Hurricanes home game.

The school-wide component of the challenge includes the tracking of books read collectively at the school site. This component will include the following:

●  Schools that collectively read 2,020 books between Sept. 30 and Dec. 6 will be entered into a drawing by region to participate in a culminating event (the Cool School Field Trip) at PNC Arena during the school day in February.

●  If your school is selected from the drawing to attend the Cool School Field Trip, students will have the opportunity to see a Hurricanes practice, participate in fun activities, and hear from Hurricanes players.

●  Students will record the titles of every book they read along with their names on paper “pucks.” These “pucks” will be added to their school’s Hurricanes hockey goal banner. The goal is to collectively fill the banner with 2,020 pucks.

Thank you for your willingness to participate in the READvolution program! We appreciate this opportunity to build lifelong readers and learners in our community.
